Origin Story & Evolution

Tosa cutlery (Tosa Uchihamono) dates back over 400 years to the late Sengoku period, when local warlord Chosokabe Motochika returned from campaigns and established blacksmith guilds. The region, rich in forests and mountains, required heavy agricultural and forestry tools like axes, hatchets, and pruning sickles. This created a culture of 'Free Forging' (Jiyu-Tanzo), where blades are formed by hammer strikes without any fixed molds. Today, Tosa produces highly durable, affordable, and practical kitchen knives and forestry gear.

Key Forging Techniques

Jiyu-Tanzo (Free Forging)

Shaping red-hot steel purely by hand and hammer without any casting mold, enabling unique customized shapes.

Kurouchi Finish

Leaving the black oxide scale layer from the forge heat on the blade flats, providing natural rust protection.
